二十四節気 「小雪」 Nijuushi-sekki 'Shosetsu'

When referring to the lyrics of Fujifabric, it is probably a good idea to have a glimpse of distinctive four seasons, the delicate weather, and the beauties of nature in Japan to be able to enjoy them at the full extent. For my dear friends living abroad, I am going to write trial posts over the coming year to introduce 24 solar terms  (二十四節気　nijuu-shi sekki) which mark weather cycles and seasonal events in Japan and other East Asian countries.

Nijuu-shi Sekki (二十四節気）
Nijuu-shi Sekki divides a year into 24 parts according to the position of the sun in an ecliptic plane. Although this method originated in China, it is still widely used in the rest of East Asian countries such as Japan. It adjusts the difference between the luni-solar calendars and actual seasonal and weather cycle.

Shosetsu （小雪）
Shosetsu (literally means 'little snow') starts today, 22nd November 2018, and ends on 6th December. It is the season when we hear the news of snow falls in the north of Japan. The temperature drops but there is not much snow in the flat area yet - so that is why this period is called 'little snow'. The nipping wind of winter blows turning fallen leaves on the street and thin winter sunshine sparkles on the icy ground in the early morning.
The weather in Shosetsu is characterized by the cold morning on a sunny day and the warm morning on a rainy day. Conversely, it can also be depicted by the warm afternoon on a sunny day and the cold afternoon on a rainy day.

海外にいるフジファブリックファンの皆様へ

フジファブリックは叙情的で季節感にあふれる曲も多く、日本の文学や美術に通ずるところが多々あります。2020年の東京オリンピックを前に、世界から日本文化が見直されている今だからこそ、海外の皆様にフジファブリックの音楽をより深く楽しんでもらいたいと思う今日この頃です。

フジファブリックの1st Album 「Fujifabric」の歌詞は、数年前に英訳済みでしたが、この度、共訳者のCeline Garbuttと今一度、歌詞を推敲してみようということになり、改訂2018年版英訳歌詞を作成致しました。

本日、「TAIFU」「打ち上げ花火」「TOKYO MIDNIGHT」「サボテンレコード」「夜汽車」の計5曲を、ブログ内にアップ致しました。

改訂版の歌詞は、今までとどこが違うのか。

志村君が音楽を作るときに大事にしていた「できるだけ限定的な言葉を使わず、聴き手が自分に合わせて自由にきけるような歌詞を作る」を固守しつつ、英文学作品などにも使われるような文学的表現を使うことにより、志村君が描いた歌詞世界を忠実に訳すよう努力しました。

英語と日本語は、文法や言語の成り立ちなどが根本的に異なる言語ですが、英語を母語とするリスナーが読んでもすんなりと心に入ってくるような文章になるよう、英語の自然な言い回しを心がけました。

フジファブリックの世界を、より身近に感じてもらうお手伝いができましたら幸いです。

虫の祭り Vol.2 （2018年版 改稿記事）

「虫の音」
「祭り」
「花火」

フジファブリック「虫の祭り」を聴いたときに、歌詞や曲名に登場するこの意外な組み合わせに、ハッとさせらた方も大勢いらっしゃるかと思います。夏と秋の季語が同居しているこの曲の歌詞の魅力を、今日は考えてみたいと思います。

小泉八雲の記述によると、八雲が日本に滞在していた明治20年から30年代にかけて、日本の縁日では木でできた虫籠に鳴く虫を入れて売る「虫屋の屋台」なるものが、軒を連ねていたそうです。

日本では古くから、虫はその出す音色のため珍重されてきました。

千年の歴史を持つ文学が、ものめずらしく繊細な美で充ちあふれる文学が、このはかない命の虫という題材から成り立っている、などとはどんな外国人に想像できるだろうか。

10世紀後半には、野辺に出て行って虫の音を楽しんだり、虫とり（鳴き声を頼りに草原に入り、虫を取って虫籠に入れ、家に持ち帰ること）に行ったりという娯楽があり、江戸時代には虫の捕獲や飼育だけではなく、養殖まで行われていたそうです。

なぜ日本人は、そこまで虫の音に心惹かれるのでしょう。

虫の声を聴くとき、私たちは虫の境遇や儚い命を思うだけではなく、秋という季節のもつ憂愁に思いを馳せるのではないかと八雲は言っています。

この憂愁をうたった言葉のほぼ全ては、別れの悲しみを暗に言っているにすぎない。秋になれば色が変わり、木の葉が舞い、虫の声がかもしだす霊的な悲哀がある。そのため秋は、仏教からすれば無常、つまり死の必然、あらゆる欲望につきまとう苦しみ、そして孤独の苦しさを象徴している。

たとえこういった虫をうたった詩が本来は恋の気持ちをほのめかすつもりだったとしても、その時はまた、ありのままの純な自然が人の想像力と記憶とに及ぼす、ごくごくわずかな影響力をうつし出してはいないだろうか。

「虫の祭り」（作詞作曲：志村正彦　編曲：フジファブリック）は2004年9月29日、フジファブリックの通算3枚目のシングル「赤黄色の金木犀」のカップリング曲としてリリースされました。ちょうど金木犀の季節に合わせて、リリースされたのですね。


「赤黄色の金木犀」について、「匂いが香ってくるような曲にしたい」と、志村君は語っていましたが、嗅覚をくすぐるA面に併せて作ったカップリング曲「虫の祭り」は、いうなれば想像の中で聴覚を呼び起こすという粋な手法が使われています。

恋人が去って行ってた後、部屋に一人残された自分。開けてある窓からカーテン越しに入り込むのは、秋の風にのってきこえてくる虫達の声。
祭りの様に賑やかに、花火の様に鮮やかに、聞こえてくる。


「花火の鮮やかさ」は視覚で
「祭りの賑やかさ」は視覚、聴覚、触覚で

感じるもの。

聴覚で感じる「虫の音」を表現するために、あえてこのふたつを使うセンス。

その上、「祭り」も「花火」も言わずと知れた夏の季語であるにも関わらず、秋の季語の代表格である「虫」（の音）を描写するために使おうとする感性がさすがだなと思うのです。

「にじんで　揺れて　跳ねて　結んで　開いて　閉じて　消えて」いくものは、なんだったのでしょう。

花火だったのか。
虫の音だったのか。
祭りだったのか。
それとも、祭りの様に過ぎ去った記憶の中にある何かだったのか。

あえてそれが何であるかを限定せずに、リスナーが自分の経験と記憶と想像力の中で、自分なりの「何か」をあてはめることのできる歌詞こそが、フジファブリックがフジファブリックである所以です。

ファブリックの作り出す音楽は、西洋にルーツのあるロックというジャンルでありながら、日本人が昔から愛でてきた「季節の移ろいから感じる色彩や音」が、歌詞の中で大切に歌われています。そこが私たちの感じる懐かしさであり、心地よさであり、共鳴するところなのではないでしょうか。

Ritto (立冬）
Today, 7th November 2018, Ritto, which literally means 'the beginning of winter'. According to the calendar, winter season starts today and ends on a day just before Risshun, 4th February 2019.
As days become shorter, it is the time that winter-like cold air arrives in the norther part of Japan. It is also the season of late autumn shower, and after a while, the ground starts frozen.

Fujisan Museum and Refre Fujiyoshida are in a much-visited area of Fujiyoshida City, where are famous for its colourful foliage in late autumn - from the end of October till the mid November.
