映画「スクラップ・ヘブン」リバイバル上映決定！

 話題の映画「国宝」を、もうご覧になりましたか。

この映画は李相日監督が総監督を務め、吉沢亮さんと横浜流星さんが歌舞伎役者の壮絶な一生を熱演し、観客動員1400万人、実写邦画歴代1位となる興収200億円超（2026年3月時点）、公開から9カ月以上が経過しても上映が続く、驚異的なロングランを記録しました。第98回米国アカデミー賞メイクアップ＆ヘアスタイリング賞ノミネート、第49回日本アカデミー賞最多受賞。社会現象を巻き起こしたといわれている映画です。日本の伝統文化の一つである歌舞伎の圧倒的な映像美と臨場感、俳優さんたちの演技が国内外で高く評価されています。

総監督を務めた李相日監督の初期の名作が再注目され、李監督の原点ともいわれる映画「スクラップ・ヘブン」が再評価されるに至っています。しかし、フジファブリックの「蜃気楼」がエンディングテーマとしてこの映画のために書き下ろされたという事実は、あまり知られていないかもしれません。

通算６枚目のシングル「茜色の夕日」のカップリング曲である「蜃気楼」。この曲はアルバムにも収録されていないため、音楽配信サービスが浸透していなかった頃は、なかなか視聴困難な曲の一つだったと思います。

当時、志村正彦さんは李監督との対談でこのようなことを言っています。

揺らめくような旋律と、どこか遠くを見つめるような歌声が、登場人物たちの不安定な心の行方と響き合い、映画全体に独特の余韻を残す。オリジナルメンバーの志村正彦は、当時の李監督との対談にて「映画の登場人物が歌っている感じにしたいと思った」と制作秘話を明かしている。（朝日新聞　デジタルマガジン　２０２６年３月１８日付　記事）

志村君のいう「映画の登場人物」はどんな人たちなのか。あらすじを見てみましょう。

「正義の味方」を夢見て警察官になったシンゴ（加藤亮）は、無機質なオリスでのデスクワークにうんざりする日々。ある日、シンゴはバスジャックに遭遇する。乗り合わせていたのは、テツ（オダギリジョー）とサングラスをかけた女、サキ（栗山千明）。テツの言葉をきっかけに、社会に絶望した人々の願いを叶える「復習代行」というゲームをはじめるテツとシンゴ。それは一見、鬱屈を解放するためのささやかな反抗だった。しかし、その行為は次第に現実を侵食し、彼ら自身が社会の闇へと呑み込まれていく。

「蜃気楼」は、熱気・冷気による光の異常な屈折のため、空中や地平線・水平線近くに遠方の風物などが見える気象光学現象です。比喩的意味として、「夢のように実体がなく、つかみどころのないもの」を表します。

まさに「蜃気楼」の言葉のごとく、映画の中で登場人物たちは幻の世界に引き込まれていくのです。

Have you already seen the much-talked-about film “Kokuhō (National Treasure)”?

This film, helmed by director Lee Sang-il as chief director, features powerful performances by Ryo Yoshizawa and Ryusei Yokohama, who portray the dramatic lives of Kabuki actors. It has drawn 14 million viewers and achieved box office revenues exceeding 20 billion yen as of March 2026, making it the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film of all time. Even more than nine months after its release, it continues to be screened, marking an astonishingly long theatrical run. The film was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 98th Academy Awards and won the most awards at the 49th Japan Academy Prize. It is said to have sparked a social phenomenon. The overwhelming visual beauty and immersive experience of Kabuki—one of Japan’s traditional performing arts—along with the actors’ performances, have been highly praised both domestically and internationally.

Film "Kokuho"

In addition, early works by director Lee Sang-il have been attracting renewed attention, including his formative film Scrap Heaven, which is now being reevaluated. However, it may not be widely known that the song “Mirage” (蜃気楼) by Fujifabric was specially written as the ending theme for this film.

“Mirage” is a coupling track from the band’s sixth single Akaneiro no Yūhi. Because it was not included in any album, it used to be one of the more difficult songs to access back when music streaming services were not widespread.

Today, however, it is available through the single “Akaneiro no Yūhi”, or the compilation “Single B-side Collection 2004–2009” (included in the limited-edition box set “FAB BOX”), as well as on subscription platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music.

At the time, the band’s original member Masahiko Shimura said the following in a conversation with director Lee:

The early film “Scrap Heaven”, starring Ryo Kase, Joe Odagiri, and Chiaki Kuriyama, is set to have a revival screening for the first time in 21 years.

With its wavering melody and a singing voice that seems to gaze into the distance, the song resonates with the unstable emotional states of the characters, leaving a unique lingering impression throughout the film. Shimura revealed in that conversation, “I wanted it to feel as though the characters in the film themselves were singing.”

So, what kind of people are these “film characters” Shimura referred to? Let’s take a look at the synopsis.

Shingo (Ryo Kase), who became a police officer dreaming of being a “hero of justice,” grows weary of his monotonous desk job in a sterile office. One day, he finds himself caught in a bus hijacking. Among the passengers are Tetsu (Joe Odagiri) and a woman wearing sunglasses, Saki (Chiaki Kuriyama). Prompted by Tetsu’s words, he and Shingo begin a “revenge-for-hire” game that fulfills the wishes of people who have lost hope in society. At first, it seems like a small act of rebellion to release pent-up frustration. However, their actions gradually begin to encroach upon reality, and they themselves are drawn deeper into the darkness of society.

“Mirage” refers to an optical atmospheric phenomenon in which distant scenery appears in the air or near the horizon due to abnormal refraction of light caused by heat or cold air layers. Figuratively, it represents something dreamlike, without substance, and impossible to grasp.

Just like the word “mirage” itself, the characters in the film are drawn into an illusory world.

Next time, we will look at magazine articles featuring Masahiko Shimura from the summer and autumn of 2005. These interviews—now valuable historical materials—reveal what he was thinking when he wrote the song.
